Donut Selfie? People will wonder what that is. I wondered too but I found an article that explains about that and it made me realise how cool it is. Yep, selfies are out…donut selfies are in.
Unlike still photos like the usual selfie, donut selfies are taken in a video format. It is pretty cool to see how it turns out. The person behind the idea of donut selfie is by a girl name Karen X Cheng. I personally like the idea of making the motion goes around in a loop and making it appear that you travel to places with some special teleportation ability. Usually these kind of effects can only be made with Hollywood style CGI and high-end cameras. But no. You can do this by using only your arm and your smartphone.
How to do it? Well, the idea is to start by placing the phone’s camera on the left side of your head with your right hand and slowing moving it in a semi circular motion towards the right side of your head. Okay. Not easy for me to explain it here so I’m going to share with you how Karen does it in her tutorial video below:
I was playing around with camera angles one day with my friend and we were doing sweeping camera motions around the head trying to make optical illusions. I did one that was from one side of my head to the other – made a donut around my head – and the video started looping and woahhhh that looks cool.

Pretty easy isn’t it? Now we all can try this one out when we go out anywhere. But of course if you have any experience in video editing, that will be a huge advantage for you. But a simple one like this will be easy to learn.
What are you waiting for? Go out and try this new technique. Donut selfies are coming to an Instagram near you. Check out DonutSelfie.com for more info and videos.
