Using a flip phone in 2021 is just as cool as it was when the first flip phones were launched back in the 2000’s. But it is even better now. And Samsung just set the bar way up high for the rest to play catch up with the new Galaxy Z Flip3.
Kudos to Samsung for brilliantly creating a modern smartphone that brought back memories of the flip era, with their own twist of elegance and sophistication. And have you seen the colours available for the Galaxy Flip3? Gorgeous!
Fine. Some of the colours are more suitable for the ladies but the fact remains – it turned heads, and flipped some. I honestly love the Phantom Green colour somehow. But I received the Phantom Black colour for this review. The black variant looks sleek and elegant, but the green feels a little modern to me. Other available colours are Lavender, Cream, White, Pink and Gray.
Best thing about the Galaxy Z Flip3 is the overall size. When folded, it measures 86.4 x 72.2 x 15.9-17.1 mm and while unfolded, it measures 166 x 72.2 x 6.9 mm. That is pretty thin to me. It felt really slim and thin when unfolded. The screen is tall and slim at 1080 x 2640 pixels ratio. So the first time you look at the unfolded Galaxy Z Flip3, you will immediately notice how tall and slim it is. I like it like this.
When it is folded, it feels so small in my hand. In-fact, it is smaller than my slim wallet. I consider my wallet to be the slim and compact type – more like a card holder. And the Galaxy Z Flip3 is smaller than my wallet when folded. It is very pocketable and does not look or feel bulky in my jeans pocket. But most of the time, I will hold it in my hand just because it feels good to do so.
Flipping the Flip3 open feels smooth yet solid. You can opt to use the side mounted fingerprint sensor to unlock the Flip3. But I choose to use the face recognition method instead which to me, is faster and easier. But when I have my face mask on, I would use my fingerprint.
You will tend to see the crease right in the middle of the main Dynamic AMOLED display going horizontally across. But when you have an app or website open on your display, the crease can’t be seen but you can feel it’s there. After a while, you won’t be bothered by it anymore because it won’t get in your way when you’re browsing or taking photos. It’s there, but it’s not. Something like that.
The Galaxy Z Flip3 comes with a dual camera setup. Both are 12MP, but one is for normal wide angle and the other is for ultra wide angle. The selfie camera is located right on top of the main display with 10MP wide angle camera setup. Now this is something fun you can do with the camera. You can use the main camera to shoot a selfie by using the external Super AMOLED cover display as a guide. So now you will have much better selfie quality photos when you need it. And this handy trick with the Galaxy Z Flip3 is something cool to play with.
Photos taken with the Galaxy Z Flip3 are actually pretty good. I have taken a few that wowed me. The dynamics and post-processing clarity are awesome. And the high dynamic range (HDR) is done beautifully. Some night shots came out really good. I was quite surprised at the photo quality. The photo below shows how good it is. And I did not edit the photo except for resizing to fit this page. I will surely post and review more on the photography side of the Z Flip3 in my upcoming full review.
With all the elegance and sophistication that Samsung has put into this little foldable device, they have not forgotten about the power that goes in the heart of the Flip3. The Galaxy Z Flip3 is powered by the Snapdragon 888 SoC, which is awesomely powerful and fast, coupled with an 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of internal storage. In conclusion, this is a tiny beast.
I wouldn’t have it any other way. The Galaxy Z Flip3 has set the standards really high for any other companies to reach. The amount of intense R&D that was done to create this masterpiece must’ve been thought out carefully for years. And the end result is really something worth your bucks. After all these years, they have finally made this little flipping (and folding) device waterproof. Something that I have hoped for all along.
I love the overall look of the new Galaxy Z Flip3. The build quality is superb. Design materials are top notch. The flexible main display is bright and vibrant while the external mini display is equally beautiful. This is a phone that is made with love and people in mind. This is Samsung’s passion and this is the Z Flip3.
