Author W.W. Mitchell Discusses the Importance of Character-Driven Storytelling Ahead of Halloween Release of The Price of Immortality

The author of The Price of Immortality believes readers connect with characters, not labels. His upcoming Halloween release focuses on authentic personalities, emotional stakes, and a fresh take on vampire mythology set in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.

ST. LOUIS, MO – In an entertainment landscape often dominated by spectacle, author W.W. Mitchell believes audiences are ultimately drawn to something much simpler: compelling characters.

For Mitchell, every story begins with the people who inhabit it.

“I write my characters first,” Mitchell explains. “I spend time getting to know who they are, what motivates them, what they fear, and what they want. Once I understand the characters, the world begins to build itself around them. The story becomes a natural extension of who those people are.”

That philosophy serves as the foundation for Mitchell’s upcoming novel, The Price of Immortality, a contemporary vampire thriller scheduled for release this Halloween.

Set in Newark, New Jersey, Mitchell’s hometown, the novel follows an ambitious police officer whose life changes forever after a violent encounter with a vampire. As she struggles to retain her humanity and confront the consequences of a terrible act, she finds herself pursued by former allies, law enforcement, and a militarized academy dedicated to hunting the undead.

While vampire fiction has long been associated with aristocratic bloodlines, sprawling castles, and centuries-old European settings, Mitchell sought to tell a different kind of story.

“I’ve always enjoyed vampire stories, but I wanted to explore the genre through a different lens,” he said. “I wanted something grounded, something with grit, and characters who felt like real people facing impossible circumstances.”

A key aspect of that approach was creating a cast of characters defined by their decisions, personalities, and individual journeys rather than familiar genre conventions or stereotypes.

“I don’t think readers connect with characters because of their background alone,” Mitchell said. “They connect with people who feel authentic. Whether a character is Black, White, Hispanic, male, female, hero or villain, they should have depth, flaws, strengths, and a meaningful role in the story. Nobody should exist simply to fill a slot.”

Originally published as a novella more than a decade ago, The Price of Immortality has been completely reimagined and expanded for its upcoming release. Mitchell revisited the concept with a focus on stronger characterization, deeper emotional stakes, and a more complex conflict between protagonist and antagonist.

“Every major character has a purpose,” Mitchell said. “Nobody is there simply for exposition or comic relief. I want readers to remember people because of who they are, not because they fit a template.”

Beyond its supernatural elements, The Price of Immortality explores themes of guilt, loss, revenge, redemption, and the consequences of choices that cannot be undone.

“At its core, this isn’t really a story about vampires,” Mitchell added. “It’s a story about people. The vampire element creates the conflict, but the human side of the story is what makes readers care.”

The Price of Immortality is expected to release in time for Halloween 2026. Additional information, trailer footage, and updates can be found at:
