Laura Alvarez Expands Her Independent Art Business, Bringing Community-Centered Creativity to New York Clients

Bronx-based artist Laura Alvarez is expanding her independent art business, combining illustration, murals, and public art with the entrepreneurial expertise and MBE certification needed to reach new clients.

— Laura Alvarez, a multidisciplinary artist and MBE-certified business owner based in the Bronx, is expanding her independent art practice by combining community-centered creativity with the professional expertise required to grow a sustainable art business.

Alvarez’s work spans illustration, fine art, graphic design, mural painting, hand lettering, and public art. Originally from Valencia, Spain, she has developed a practice that connects visual storytelling with the communities and environments in which her work appears. Her evolving business reflects a broader reality for independent artists: building a lasting career requires not only creative vision, but also the ability to manage projects, understand clients, develop professional networks, and identify new opportunities.

According to Alvarez, the transition from studying fine arts to operating a business involved a deliberate investment in entrepreneurial education. Workshops and professional development programs helped her understand the practical demands of sustaining an artistic career. She participated in the ARTEPRENEUR Bootcamp in 2013, organized through the New York Foundation for the Arts and SPAINRED, and engaged with Assets for Artists, a program associated with MASS MoCA and its partners. These experiences helped her approach her art practice with a stronger understanding of business development and long-term planning.

“Being an artist and running an art business require different sets of skills,” Alvarez explains. “Developing my practice meant learning how to approach the business side professionally, understand opportunities and build the foundation needed to work as a full-time artist.”

Today, her business is certified as a Women-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE), a designation that can help eligible businesses access public-sector contracting opportunities. For Alvarez, this milestone represents an important step toward expanding her client base and pursuing projects connected to New York City’s public institutions and agencies.

The certification complements a portfolio built through collaborations with organizations and businesses including the New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo, New York University, Target, and the New York City Department of Transportation. Her experience across different settings demonstrates how an individual artistic practice can serve a range of needs, from commissioned illustrations and graphic design to murals and public-facing creative projects.

Alvarez’s work remains rooted in the belief that art can create connections beyond the gallery or studio. Drawing inspiration from nature, tradition, immigration, womanhood, and social change, she uses visual elements, repetition, and lettering to develop work that encourages audiences to consider both personal experiences and broader community concerns. Her murals and public art projects often involve local residents, giving communities opportunities to contribute to the creative process and influence the spaces they encounter every day.

That community commitment also informs her leadership outside her independent studio. Alvarez co-founded BxArts Factory, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making art accessible throughout the Bronx, which operated for over 12 years. She also serves on the board of ArtBridge, which works with artists to transform urban infrastructure into public-facing exhibitions. These roles reflect her sustained involvement in expanding access to creative experiences while supporting artists and neighborhood participation.

Her multidisciplinary career also includes publishing. In 2021, Alvarez released the children’s picture book Eggie’s Adventures at Poe Cottage, extending her visual storytelling into literature for younger audiences. Her exhibitions and residencies across New York and Europe further demonstrate the range of contexts in which her practice operates.

As Alvarez continues developing her business, her trajectory highlights the importance of treating artistic entrepreneurship as an essential part of a creative career. Strong work remains central, but professional development, reliable project management, client relationships, and access to contracting opportunities can determine whether an independent practice is able to grow.

Laura Alvarez has also created el Coffee Mail Club dedicated to all things coffee, bringing together coffee lovers who appreciate the charm of handwritten letters and creative mail. Each month, members receive a thoughtfully curated package featuring a coffee-themed print or original artwork, a unique sticker, and a variety of other delightful surprises.

For Laura Alvarez, business development is not separate from the art itself. It provides a structure through which creative ideas can reach more people, enter new spaces, and contribute to the cultural life of the city. Her expanding practice offers a practical example of how artists can preserve their individual vision while building the professional foundations necessary for a sustainable business.
