Live on Kickstarter, Galactic Tartan introduces a line of kilts, flat caps, shawls, ties, and tartan fabric in custom tartan design inspired by characters from a popular space opera.
— Galactic Tartan, a new collection of science fiction-inspired tartans created by kiltmaker Bill Catherall, is currently live on Kickstarter and raising funds to bring two original designs, The Dark Father and The Bounty Hunter, into production.

Created for fans of science fiction, Scottish heritage, and meaningful design; Galactic Tartan combines traditional tartan craftsmanship with storytelling inspired by some of the most iconic character anti-heroes in film history. Rather than creating costume pieces, the project transforms familiar themes and stories into authentic tartan patterns designed to be worn, collected, and passed down for generations.
“I love tartan and kilt making, and I love all things science fiction, so this project is really just me blending two things that have shaped my life,” says Bill Catherall, creator of Galactic Tartan, on the inspiration behind the project. “Tartan is a storytelling tradition, and these designs let me tell those stories in a new way. They’re fun and they’re meaningful.”
While many people have a family or clan tartan that connects them to their heritage, others seek designs that reflect the stories, communities, and interests that have shaped their lives. Galactic Tartan was created to fill that gap by offering tartans inspired by beloved and iconic space opera films while remaining rooted in traditional Scottish design principles.
Key Features of Galactic Tartan:
- Authentic Tartan Construction — Designed using traditional Scottish tartan structure and weaving principles.
- Story-Driven Designs — Each tartan incorporates colors and patterns inspired by iconic characters and themes.
- The Dark Father and The Bounty Hunter — The first two designs being produced through the campaign based on fan favorites of the cult classic
- Created by a Professional Kiltmaker — Designed by Bill Catherall, a trained kiltmaker and founder of Caledonian Outfitters.
- Wearable Heritage — Created to be worn as kilts, garments, accessories, and heirloom pieces rather than costume items.
According to Catherall, the project offers something unique within the tartan market by combining traditional craftsmanship with stories that modern audiences already connect with.
“Most tartans on the market fall into two groups: classic clan patterns with centuries of history, and universal tartans that look nice but often don’t tell a story,” adds Catherall. “These tartans follow classic Scottish structure, but the inspiration comes from characters and stories people already love. It gives fans something they can actually connect with and feels personal.”
The current crowdfunding campaign represents the first step toward bringing a broader collection of galactic-inspired tartans to life, with additional designs in the works based on more fan favorites.
