Lifeasible Expands Support for Genome-Wide Association Study Applications in Plant Breeding Research

— Lifeasible, a biotechnology company in the agricultural sector, is pleased to announce its expanded support for genome-wide association study (GWAS) applications in plant breeding research through workflows designed for genetic variation and breeding-related analysis in plants.

GWAS is a technique for examining correlations between desired phenotypic variables and a genome-wide collection of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Linkage disequilibrium (LD) is the basis for the quantitative assessment, which is based on the genotyping and phenotyping of various individuals. A GWAS typically uses a hypothesis test with relevant test statistics, such as Pearson’s x2-test, Fisher’s exact test, the F-test, or a regression model under a null hypothesis that implies no link, to infer these associations.

Whole genome sequencing has been widely available in a variety of species with phenotype differences as the cost of DNA sequencing has steadily decreased, encouraging the use of GWAS in plant breeding.

Supported by diverse knowledge background in genetics, molecular biology, statistics, and bioinformatics, scientists at Lifeasible now provides one-stop services in GWAS plant breeding, covering genome sequencing, SNPs discovery, association statistical analysis, as well as validation of candidate gene functions.

In addition to the core GWAS workflow, the service also integrates a range of supporting bioinformatics analyses used in population and genetic structure assessment. These analyses include SNP detection and annotation, phylogenetic tree construction, linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), population structure analysis, kinship analysis, and other related computational evaluations.

“We are glad to strengthen our GWAS-related support for plant breeding research,” said Isla, a representative from Lifeasible. “The service is aimed at helping researchers integrate genotyping data, phenotypic information, and statistical analysis more efficiently to support candidate gene identification and trait studies.”
