InstruMix, founded by Aysha Tenouri in 2017, is approaching its ninth anniversary as the senior wellness program continues to expand its music, movement and instructor certification programs.
— InstruMix, a senior wellness program founded by Aysha Tenouri in 2017, is approaching its ninth anniversary with a continued focus on using music, movement and simple percussion instruments in activities for older adults.
The program combines range-of-motion exercises with instruments such as egg shakers, rhythm sticks, bells and castanets. Sessions can be conducted while seated or standing, allowing instructors to adjust activities based on participants’ abilities.
Tenouri developed InstruMix around the idea that physical activity for older adults can include music and group participation. “There is value in creating an environment where people can participate at their own level,” Tenouri said. “Our philosophy is, ‘There’s No Wrong Way to Play.’ The goal is to give participants an opportunity to take part without feeling that they have to perform perfectly.”

The program is designed for use with older adults with different physical and cognitive abilities. According to Tenouri, instructors can modify movements and activities to accommodate participants and allow them to remain part of a group session.
“Inclusion has to be part of the experience from the beginning,” Tenouri said. “Someone may participate by moving both arms, tapping a rhythm, playing an instrument or responding to the music. Each of those forms of participation can be part of the session.”
InstruMix is used in settings that include assisted living, independent living and memory care, where participants may have different levels of mobility and cognitive ability. The program’s adaptable format allows instructors to modify activities for individual participants.
The organization also has an instructor certification program for people working in or interested in senior wellness, fitness, recreation and related fields. The program provides training in the InstruMix approach so certified instructors can lead sessions in their own communities.

As the organization approaches its ninth anniversary, Tenouri said expanding the instructor network is an important part of InstruMix’s next stage.
“Certification is about learning how to lead a class and understanding how to adapt activities for different participants,” she said. “We want instructors to have practical tools they can use when working with older adults.”
InstruMix’s approach centers on combining movement with music and group participation. Its sessions are structured so that participants can take part at different levels of physical ability.
For Tenouri, the program’s continued development reflects the role that activities involving movement, music and social interaction can play in senior programming.
“Growing older should not mean giving up opportunities for connection, creativity or participation,” Tenouri said. “My goal is to make InstruMix available to more communities and to give older adults another way to take part in movement and group activities.”
