U Mobile, the award-winning mobile and digital services provider, has formed strategic partnerships with eight state-backed Network Facility Provider companies (“SBC”) to prepare and accelerate the rollout of 5G under the government’s dual network model. This partnership demonstrates U Mobile’s dedication to implement the most efficient and cost-effective deployment of the second 5G network by leveraging the extensive combined tower infrastructure footprint and expertise of these companies.
These eight SBCs are members of Persatuan Penyedia Infrastruktur Telekomunikasi (PPIT) Malaysia and they are D’ Harmoni Telco Infra, Konsortium Jaringan Selangor, Perlis Comm, Infra Quest, Sacofa, Desabina Industries, PDC Telecommunication Services and PINS Network Solutions (“PPIT Consortium”).
By signing the MOU, the PPIT Consortium is expressing their full support for U Mobile’s rollout of the second 5G network. This involves close collaboration on knowledge sharing and the provision of access to tower structures, space, power and expedited site implementations to accelerate deployment of 5G sites. This streamlined process, combined with the experience and skillsets of these SBCs, will ultimately speed up 5G coverage expansion in the country.
Additionally, the parties will establish cost efficient commercial models for various infrastructure requirements including built-to-suit sites, co-locations and site upgrades, with the goal of establishing a competitive and sustainable offering between U Mobile and PPIT Consortium.
“U Mobile is committed to bringing affordable, high-quality 5G to Malaysia, in line with the government’s plan for a second 5G network to boost competition and drive sustainability of the country’s telecommunications industry. To achieve this, we’re delighted to be able to work with local partners such as the PPIT Consortium, as their talent and local knowledge will be of great value to U Mobile in our quest to significantly speed up our 5G rollout, bringing the benefits and economic advantages of 5G technology to consumers, businesses and the public sector,” said Woon Ooi Yuen, Chief Technology Officer at U Mobile.
Muniff Kamarruddin, President of PPIT Malaysia said: “Collaboration is key to achieving the nation’s 5G milestones. PPIT which is comprised of a strong network of proven infrastructure partners with a deep understanding of the regulatory landscapes across various states, streamlined processes, established business practices and most importantly a shared goal, is pleased to work closely towards deploying the right infrastructure to accelerate our country’s digital goals. PPIT is committed to ensuring a smooth roll out of the second 5G network.”
The rollout of the second 5G network is expected to drive innovation across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and smart cities, further contributing to the nation’s economic growth. Hence, this partnership underscores U Mobile’s dedication to meet and exceed industry standards and customer expectations, ensuring that Malaysia remains at the forefront of technological advancement in the region.
Other members of PPIT Consortium include Yiked Bina, a subsidiary of EDOTCO, and EdgePoint Towers, both of whom entered into a MoU with U Mobile earlier in July 2024.
