The Malaysian smartphone scene is flooded with choices, but if you’re hunting for a gaming-friendly phone that won’t drain your wallet, the realme 14 5G is a strong contender. Priced in the mid-range, this phone boasts a Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset, 120Hz AMOLED display, stereo speakers, and a massive 6,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging. It also wears a gamer-inspired “Mecha” aesthetic, though not everyone will vibe with its flat plastic back that attracts smudges.
But beyond the surface, how well does the realme 14 5G actually perform? After putting it through daily use, long gaming sessions, and everything in between, here’s what we found.
First Look and Design
From the moment you unbox the realme 14 5G, it makes an impression. The design leans heavily into the gaming aesthetic without going overboard. It’s got enough flash to feel exciting, but still manages to stay practical enough for everyday use. Let’s break it down.

Solid Build Quality
Despite the realme 14 being made of plastic, the build doesn’t feel cheap or fragile. In fact, it’s surprisingly sturdy for a phone at this price point. There’s no creaking or flex when you hold it, and the frame feels rigid enough to handle everyday bumps and drops. The flat design helps it sit securely in the hand or on a table, and it has a nice balance, neither too light nor too heavy.
Mecha-Inspired Back Design
realme 14 went full-on gamer with the Mecha design at the back. Think angular lines, textured elements, and geometric accents that scream “ready to game.” It’s definitely made to stand out, especially in a market where most mid-range phones opt for plain gradients or shiny backs. If you’re into gaming gear or sci-fi aesthetics, you’ll love this. It also gives the phone a bit of personality.

However, the flat plastic back isn’t doing it any favours either. It looks sleek out of the box but quickly turns into a smudgy mess. In Malaysia’s humid weather, sweaty palms and oily fingers are a given, so unless you slap on a case (which we highly recommend), you’ll be constantly wiping it down.
Thoughtful Button Placement
On the right side of the phone, you’ll find the volume rocker stacked right above a bright orange power button. The orange accent is subtle but stylish, just enough to catch the eye without being loud. Button feedback is satisfying, with a solid click when pressed. Placement is ergonomic too, whether you’re right-handed or left-handed, it’s easy to reach without adjusting your grip too much.

Camera Island That Keeps It Simple
Around the back, the dual-camera island is sized just right. It doesn’t protrude like some other models that look like they borrowed a camera bump from a DSLR. It sits flush enough that it doesn’t rock badly on flat surfaces. The rectangular layout blends well with the Mecha design, giving a balanced look to the upper rear section.
Dual-Camera Setup That Covers the Basics
On that camera island, you’re getting a solid dual-camera setup. The main shooter is a 50MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and PDAF (phase detection autofocus), which helps it lock focus quickly. It also includes Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), a rare feature at this price range and super helpful for minimizing blur. The second camera is a depth sensor, mainly used for portrait shots and background blur effects. It’s not revolutionary, but it adds a bit of versatility.

Selfie Camera That Gets the Job Done
Up front, the realme 14 5G is fitted with a 16MP selfie camera with a 24mm wide lens. With an aperture of f/2.4, it performs decently in good lighting, sharp enough for Instagram posts or video calls. Don’t expect flagship-level detail, especially in low light, but for casual use, it holds up well. Skin tones look natural, and there’s minimal distortion.
Ring Light Notification and LED Flash
One unique touch that adds a layer of functionality is the small ring notification light placed next to the rear cameras. It glows softly for incoming messages, calls, and charging status. It’s a feature that used to be common but is now rarely seen, so it’s great to have it here. Plus, there’s an LED flash above the camera module, which comes in handy not just for photos, but also as a quick flashlight in dark situations.
Display: Smooth and Vivid
The 6.67-inch AMOLED display is a joy to use indoors. Colours pop, blacks are deep, and the high refresh rate makes every swipe and scroll buttery smooth. Watching YouTube, Netflix, or TikToks looks great. Gaming visuals are sharp and immersive.

Taking the realme 14 outdoors under the blazing Malaysian sun, and brightness causes no issue. At peak brightness, you can see clearly even during midday. You don’t have to shade the display in order to read some text or take photos. At 2000 nits, the peak brightness is more than enough to handle outdoor use, any time of the day. And for a mid-range phone, the AMOLED panel with 120Hz is definitely a highlight.
Built Tough with IP68/IP69 Protection
One feature that really sets the realme 14 5G apart in this price range is its IP68 and IP69 rating for dust and water resistance. Something you usually only see in higher-end flagship phones. This means the device is fully dust-tight, so if you’re using it outdoors in dusty areas, you don’t have to worry about particles sneaking into the ports or speaker grills.
Even more impressively, the phone can handle high-pressure water jets under the IP69 rating, and it’s immersible in water up to 2.5 meters for 30 minutes under IP68 certification. That gives you serious peace of mind if you accidentally drop it in the sink, get caught in a heavy thunderstorm, or even bring it near the pool or beach.
While we don’t recommend testing this feature for fun (just because it can survive water doesn’t mean it enjoys it), it’s a major bonus for anyone who lives an active lifestyle or works in unpredictable environments. For users who deal with sudden rain, humidity, or just everyday wear and tear, this kind of protection adds real value.
Performance: Built to Play
Let’s cut to the chase. The realme 14 5G was clearly built with gaming in mind. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 is a solid mid-range processor that holds its own for most mobile titles. Games like Delta Force, PUBG Mobile, and Genshin Impact run smoothly at medium to high settings, with only slight frame dips under heavy load. For casual to semi-hardcore gamers in Malaysia, this is more than enough to grind your ranked matches or event quests without frustration.

Paired with a 120Hz refresh rate, the phone delivers a visibly smoother experience. It feels responsive and fast, even with multiple apps open. That extra fluidity isn’t just cosmetic, it helps in-game, especially when you need quick taps and swipes.
The realme 14 5G also comes with 12GB of RAM, with the ability to expand up to another 14GB of RAM via the RAM expansion feature, made it even more capable of heavy gaming load and multitasking.

The realme 14 5G scored 772,533 points on Antutu and 3,813 points on 3DMark Wild Life. That’s a strong score for a mid-range device, and it places the realme 14 5G comfortably ahead of many of its peers in the same price bracket. It also reflects solid multitasking capabilities. In real-world use, this score translates to a responsive UI, faster app launch times, and minimal frame drops in high-demand scenarios. No sweat when you’re gaming for hours or just juggling multiple apps.
Heat is another concern for gamers, and realme tackles this with a 6-layer vapor chamber cooling system. In everyday Malaysian conditions which is mostly humid, or often warm, the phone stayed relatively cool during extended gameplay. It didn’t overheat, didn’t throttle noticeably, and kept the performance stable.

Running on Android 15 with realme UI, the phone feels modern and fluid. You get helpful features like Game Space (to block distractions during play), system-wide dark mode, custom themes, and more. The interface is smooth and snappy, and localisations (including Bahasa Malaysia) are well-executed.
Realme UI isn’t bloated, but there are some pre-installed apps you might want to uninstall. Updates are expected to roll in for the next couple of years, but don’t expect the fastest rollout compared to premium brands. However, the realme 14 comes with a pleasant software experience that complements the hardware well.
Battery & Audio
One of the most impressive aspects of the realme 14 5G is its endurance. The 6,000mAh battery is massive and it delivers. We easily got through a full day of heavy use. That means gaming, social media, messaging, streaming, and navigation, with battery to spare.
Moderate users could probably stretch this to two days. Even better, the 45W fast charging is quick enough to bring you from zero to nearly full in under an hour. Perfect for those always on the move, or if you forgot to plug in overnight and need a top-up before heading to work.
In a country where mobile gaming is growing fast and people are often on-the-go, battery life like this is a huge win.
The stereo speakers get decently loud and are fine for casual gaming or YouTube. But the sound lacks depth and bass. In noisy environments, the audio gets drowned out easily, but still loud enough to hear.
If you’re particular about audio, a good pair of earbuds or headphones will make a big difference. Thankfully, Bluetooth performance is solid, with no noticeable lag or drops.
Camera & Photography

The realme 14 5G features a dual-camera setup on the back, a 50MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture, PDAF (phase detection autofocus), and optical image stabilization (OIS), accompanied by a basic depth sensor. The setup is designed more for utility than artistic photography, but it performs decently in well-lit environments. Photos of food, people, or outdoor scenes during the day look crisp enough to share on Instagram or WhatsApp.
In daylight, colours appear natural and details are fairly sharp. The main sensor captures texture and contrast well, although highlights can sometimes get blown out in harsh lighting. Autofocus is quick and generally accurate, which helps when you’re trying to capture moments on the go.
Low-light photography, however, is where the cracks start to show. Even with OIS, the camera struggles to retain clarity in dim settings. Noise creeps in, detail softens, and without a dedicated night mode that truly shines, results are hit or miss. It’s not unusable, but you’ll need a steady hand and some patience.

On the front, you get a 16MP selfie shooter with a wide 24mm lens. It’s good enough for video calls, selfies, and stories. Skin tones come out relatively natural, and beauty filters are available if you want to smooth things over a bit. Just don’t expect ultra-detailed shots or great performance in dim lighting.
One feature we didn’t expect to love as much as we did is the tilt-shift mode on the camera. If you’re not familiar with it, tilt-shift is a photographic trick that makes real-life scenes look like tiny toy models or miniature dioramas. It’s usually something you’d only find with expensive DSLR lenses, so seeing it included here is a pleasant surprise. And the best part? It actually works. The effect is convincing, with smooth focus transitions and a natural blur that gives your photos that “mini-world” vibe. It’s a fun creative tool to play with, especially if you enjoy experimenting with photography beyond the usual point-and-shoot style.

For videos, the realme 14 is able to shoot up to 4K at 30fps, while the full HD 1080p is able to shoot at 60fps. The OIS worked quite well for videos but can be a little shaky if you’re shooting from inside a car. All in all, the video shooting capabilities is on par with some other mid-range phones at this price point, if not better.
In short, the realme 14’s camera system gets the job done for casual users, but if photography or videography is a big part of your smartphone experience, you may find that there will be a little hit and miss. In good lighting conditions, the camera worked really well. Same can be said when shooting videos. But you can still be happy with most of it and it will do just fine for your IG Reels and TikTok posts.

Verdict: Great Value for Gamers, With Minor Compromises
The realme 14 5G makes it crystal clear who it’s made for, gamers and power users who want strong performance without paying flagship prices. In that regard, it delivers confidently. Its Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chip, 26GB of RAM in total, and 120Hz AMOLED display provide a smooth and reliable gaming experience that’s rare at this price. Add the massive 6,000mAh battery, efficient vapor chamber cooling, and fast 45W charging, and you’ve got a phone that handles long gaming sessions and heavy usage like a champ.
It’s a device that gets the essentials right: performance, endurance, and display quality. Those are the pillars most Malaysian mobile gamers care about. All in all, this phone can really keep up.
That said, the realme 14 5G does come with trade-offs. The camera is commendable in terms of quality and may not satisfy users who love to take a lot of photos or shoot videos in varied lighting conditions. The design, while being bold and unique, may not appeal to everyone. And the plastic back is a magnet for smudges. The stereo speakers are acceptable but lack the clarity and depth found in slightly pricier competitors.
However, these shortcomings are understandable when you look at the price tag. What matters is that realme didn’t cut corners where it counts for its target audience. The software is clean, the hardware feels solid, and the overall experience is snappy and fluid.
For a device that is priced at RM1,299.00 in Malaysia, it’s hard to find another phone that delivers this level of gaming performance and battery life. It’s perfect for students, young professionals, or casual gamers who want a daily driver that won’t disappoint during long commutes, weekend getaways, or late-night game marathons.
If smooth gaming, long battery life, and solid everyday performance top your list, the realme 14 5G is one of the best options currently out there. It may not be perfect, but it knows its priorities, and nails them.
