Los Angeles, CA, California, United States, May 18, 2026 — Professor Barry Barish, the 2017 Nobel Laureate in Physics and renowned as the “Father of Gravitational Waves” from the California Institute of Technology, visited the office of Mr. Hu Jiaqi, Director of Humanitas Ark, in Beijing on April 15, 2026. A giant of physics who has spent his life exploring the mysteries of the universe and a distinguished Chinese anthropologist long focused on the holistic survival of humanity engaged in a two-hour in-depth dialogue on the future of science, technology, and humankind.

Astrophysics and the Future of Humanity: A Dialogue Between the “Father of Gravitational Waves” and Mr. Hu Jiaqi, Founder of Humanitas Ark

    I. A Scientific Giant Exploring the Mysteries of the Universe

Barry Barish holds an unshakable position in contemporary physics. In 1994, he resolutely took over the then-stagnant Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project. With his exceptional leadership and foresight, he transformed it into an international endeavor involving over a thousand scientists. In 2015, he led his team to the first direct detection of gravitational waves, confirming the last prediction of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and opening a new window for humanity to observe the universe. This achievement earned him the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics and the academic honorific “Father of Gravitational Waves.”

II. Another Kind of Gravity: Hu Jiaqi’s Inquiry into the Fate of Humanity

During their exchange, Mr. Hu Jiaqi systematically introduced his research findings spanning over four decades. He proposed that the continued development of science and technology, if left unconstrained, would lead to the extinction of humanity within this century or within the next two to three hundred years. He has constructed a complete academic system based on the Principle of Maximum Value, the Principle of Justice, and the Principle of Farsightedness, advocating for a global awakening movement and the Great Unification of humanity to address this crisis.

Professor Barish showed strong interest in this theoretical framework. He carefully listened to Hu Jiaqi’s qualitative reasoning methods for “extinction path analysis” and “defense limit testing” and, during the subsequent dialogue, expressed both profound resonance and some differing views.

III. Confluence of Ideas: Resonance and Divergence

During the exchange, Professor Barish fully acknowledged Hu Jiaqi’s warning regarding the safety risks of technology. He stated, “The dangers you point out are real.” He believed that whether nuclear weapons, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, or AI, these technologies have developed to the point of threatening the holistic survival of humanity, while human society has yet to establish effective prevention and control mechanisms.

Professor Barish highly appreciated the ideal framework Hu Jiaqi has designed for a future society — a peaceful, friendly, equitably prosperous, and non-competitive society. He believes such a vision is worthy of pursuit by all humanity.

More importantly, Professor Barish was deeply moved by Hu Jiaqi’s persistent spirit over 47 years. He wrote in his message:

“Thank you for your thoughtful dedication to preserving humanity. The dangers you present are real. I hope we (mankind) can follow your lead.”

This statement is not only an affirmation of Hu Jiaqi personally but also a solemn endorsement of the cause of safeguarding humanity to which he has dedicated his life.

However, a significant divergence emerged in their assessment of the destructiveness of nuclear weapons. Hu Jiaqi believes that while nuclear bombs can cause massive casualties, they cannot completely exterminate humanity — there would always be survivors to continue the species. Professor Barish held a different view. He pointed out that humanity now possesses more powerful weapons, such as hydrogen bombs, whose destructive force is sufficient to trigger a global ecological catastrophe similar to an asteroid impact on Earth, potentially leading to the complete destruction of civilization.

Regarding the solution pathway, Professor Barish also expressed cautious pessimism about the feasibility of establishing a world regime through intergovernmental cooperation. He believes that trust among current governments is extremely fragile and that competitive relationships are deeply entrenched, making it extraordinarily difficult for nations to voluntarily cede sovereignty to form a unified regime. In contrast, he leans more toward awakening public consciousness through education and enlightenment rather than relying on top-down coercive restrictions.

IV. Beyond the Dialogue: A Memorandum on the Future

The collision of ideas between a Nobel laureate in physics and a Chinese scholar focused on humanity’s future is itself symbolic. It indicates that non-mainstream academic thinking, represented by Hu Jiaqi, can enter the purview of the world’s top scientists and be taken seriously.

Professor Barish’s evaluation — “what you’re doing is incredibly important, and more people should do that” — injects confidence and momentum into this “awakening movement,” which has not yet been widely recognized.

More importantly, this dialogue showcased the demeanor of mature thinkers: respecting differences while seeking common ground. As Hu Jiaqi quoted at the end of their exchange, “Gentlemen seek harmony but maintain diversity.” On the ultimate question of whether humanity faces an existential crisis, the two reached fundamental agreement: the continued development of science and technology must not proceed recklessly. As for the details of possible solutions, each may retain their own judgment.

This dialogue, bridging science and humanities, East and West, is destined to be remembered as part of humanity’s ongoing exploration of its own future.
