Send Hope announces the launch of a Nutrition Program in La Mosquitia, Honduras, expanding food support alongside its medical and educational initiatives for local children.
— Send Hope has announced the official rollout of its Nutrition Program in Honduras, expanding its work in La Mosquitia to include a dedicated focus on food support for children in the remote region. The program adds regular meal distribution to the organization’s existing medical, educational, and community initiatives.
“By developing reliable localized supply corridors, we hope to assist families in numerous rural villages throughout the Miskito Coast,” founder Sharon Brian states. “We want to help provide young people with wholesome food resources that can complement the care and services available through our programs.”

The Nutrition Program brings together volunteers in the United States and local leaders in La Mosquitia. In the United States, volunteer packing events conducted through partnerships such as Kids Against Hunger give individuals, civic groups, and families an opportunity to assemble rice-based, vitamin-fortified meal packages for distribution in Honduras.
Once transported to Honduras, the meal packages are distributed to children living at community facilities and to local public elementary schools. The program is designed to provide a consistent source of food support as part of Send Hope’s broader work in the region. “Packing meals together in Texas connects hearts across thousands of miles, reminding us that simple acts of service can bring comfort,” explains Sharon.
Send Hope was established in 2000 through the shared vision of Sharon and Dr. Tom Brian, following dental and humanitarian trips that began in 1991. Based in Allen, Texas, the nonprofit organization has expanded its work over the past two decades to address areas including child care, education, medical services, and community support in Central America.
A key part of these efforts is the House of Hope in Puerto Lempira, which provides residential care and support for youth. The campus includes living quarters, an on-site dental clinic, and administrative spaces supporting Send Hope’s work in the surrounding community. Nearby, Escuela Casa Esperanza is a public elementary school facility constructed by Send Hope and made available to local educational authorities.

Providing services in remote communities along the Miskito Coast involves significant logistical considerations. Travel in the region often relies on river watercraft and light aircraft, while food, medical supplies, and educational materials must be transported and stored locally. Send Hope maintains six storage facilities in Puerto Lempira to support the distribution of supplies across the region.
The Nutrition Program is intended to complement these existing operations by incorporating food distribution into Send Hope’s broader community activities. Its meal packages are prepared with nutritional considerations in mind, while distribution is coordinated through community facilities and schools based on local needs and available resources.
“Our desire has always been to walk alongside families, providing gentle encouragement and nourishment so that every young person feels valued,” Sharon remarks. “When a community receives consistent care, it can create additional support for families and young people.”
Through its various programs, Send Hope provides housing, medical services, educational support, and food assistance to communities in La Mosquitia. Donors and volunteers contribute through financial support, participation in food-packing events, and assistance with the organization’s ongoing operations in Honduras. The launch of the Nutrition Program represents an expansion of Send Hope’s existing community support activities, adding regular food distribution to its work alongside families, schools, and community facilities in the region.
