Southern California Restless Limb Syndrome Diagnosis & Treatment Service Updated

Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center has updated its restless limb syndrome service, helping patients identify potential causes of nighttime discomfort and explore individualized treatment options for better sleep.

— Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center has announced an updated evaluation and treatment service for restless limb syndrome (RLS), a condition characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs or other extremities. The center evaluates potential underlying causes and offers treatment options based on each patient’s symptoms and medical history.

The updated service comes as restless limb syndrome continues to affect a significant portion of the U.S. population. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, an estimated 7-10% of Americans may have RLS, a condition that can interfere with sleep and contribute to daytime exhaustion.

The center distinguishes between primary and secondary RLS when evaluating patients. With primary RLS, there may be no identifiable underlying cause, although family history can play a significant role. More than half of patients with primary RLS have a family history of the condition, and having an immediate relative with RLS can increase the risk of developing it by three to six times.

Secondary restless limb syndrome, by contrast, may be associated with an underlying medical issue. Potential contributing factors include iron deficiency, vitamin or mineral deficiencies, pregnancy, diabetes, neurological disorders, and kidney or liver failure. Certain medications and substances, including some antidepressants, sedating antihistamines, caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol, may also cause or worsen symptoms.

Treatment begins by identifying whether an underlying condition is contributing to RLS. Depending on the cause and severity, management may include correcting nutritional deficiencies or medical conditions, making behavioral changes, or considering medication. Regular exercise, reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption, walking, massage, and warm baths may also provide relief for some individuals.

For individuals experiencing persistent nighttime discomfort, an uncontrollable urge to move, or sleep disruption associated with these symptoms, a professional evaluation can help determine possible causes and appropriate next steps. Understanding whether symptoms are linked to primary or secondary RLS can also help patients explore treatment options suited to their individual needs.
