Founded by Executive Director Maria Markle, Ravens Flight Equestrian was established with a vision of creating a year-round equine-assisted program serving communities across Alaska’s Interior. After relocating to Alaska, Markle recognized a significant need for additional community-based emotional wellness resources and envisioned an organization where horses could help bridge that gap for people of all ages.
Drawing on nearly four decades of experience in healthcare, while completing a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling to become a licensed professional counselor, Markle believes emotional wellness benefits from approaches that recognize the profound impact of relationships, nature, and experiential learning.
The organization’s work is grounded in trauma-informed practices that encourage resilience, emotional regulation, and personal growth through carefully guided interactions with horses.
“Our vision has always been larger than creating another nonprofit,” said Markle. “We are building a community resource where people can experience genuine connection, rediscover confidence, and remember that healing can begin in places they never expected. Horses have an extraordinary ability to meet people without judgment, and that creates space for hope to grow.”
The expansion builds upon an evolving portfolio of equine-assisted services that continues to reach diverse populations. Existing and developing programs include equine-assisted learning experiences focused on trust and emotional growth, senior outreach visits featuring the organization’s miniature horses, youth camps that teach horsemanship and responsibility, Horses for Heroes programming supporting veterans, and therapeutic and recreational riding initiatives currently under development. Together, these offerings reflect a holistic approach to improving quality of life while strengthening social connections across generations.
