GUKA Packaging urges luxury brands to prepare now for EU 2030 regulations banning packaging designed only to boost perceived size.
— The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) entered into force in 2025, with its packaging-minimisation rules applying from 2030. Among them is a restriction on packaging designed only to increase a product’s perceived volume. GUKA Packaging, a custom packaging manufacturer serving global brands, is advising premium brands to begin redesigning their packaging now rather than waiting for the deadline.
The rule has particular implications for luxury, beauty, and spirits, where oversized presentation boxes, false bottoms, and decorative outer layers have long been used to signal value. From 2030, packaging placed on the EU market must be reduced to the minimum necessary for its function.
GUKA Packaging argues the change is an opportunity, not a threat. Its position is that perceived value can come from better structure, materials, and finishing rather than from size, and that a smaller, well-engineered box can feel more premium than a larger one.
“The brands that start redesigning now will spend 2030 selling packaging their competitors cannot copy, while the ones that wait will spend it explaining why the box needs a false bottom,” a spokesperson for GUKA Packaging said.
