Review: Xiaomi RedMi Note – Clear Runner

Camera and Imaging

Yeah. This is the category you all been waiting for. Right? I always save this part for last. And all of you vain selfie lovers would love to know how the RedMi Note shoot pictures. Easy. Just point and shoot.

Literally.

The camera interface is clear and simple. Point the camera to your subject and press the camera icon. Done. Autofocus is good, colours are vibrant and I don’t get much washed out pictures. All the photos taken are not edited in any manner. So what you see in the picture is how it was produced by the RedMi Note. Click on the picture to enlarge.

As I said earlier, most of the photos that came out of the Redmi Note requires only minimal editing. Other than that, it works fine. Noise is almost none in low ISO but when the environment gets darker and the ISO goes higher, I can start to see the noise all over the photo. But it is still useable because it is not that obvious when you view the photos on a mobile device.

Colours are good, like I said. White balance is spot on. I would usually see some either red or yellow tinge in a photo that came out from a smartphone but no such problem with the RedMi Note. The 13 megapixel main shooter is great in my opinion, or at least it is above par for a mid-range smartphone. The front camera is 5 megapixel. So for those selfie lovers who are vain enough to have their photos taken 24/7 would love the front camera. It is not great, but it is not bad either.

I don’t have the time to capture a video from this phone. So I don’t have a video sample. Anyway, it can shoot a full HD video at 1080p / 30fps.

Conclusion

For something that is priced below RM800, the Xiaomi RedMi Note is really a good bargain. The performance of this Octa-core phone is commendable. Those who love gaming would also love this phone. It’s using the same MediaTek chipset as my previously reviewed Gphone EVO, so the video playback performance is also superb. The RedMi Note has an upper hand against the Gphone EVO whereby it has a 2GB RAM, unlike only 1GB RAM on the latter.

If you’re looking for a different look and feel, this is for you. The MIUI interface is beautiful with vibrant solid icons nicely laid out in the main screens. If you can do without the app drawer, then this iPhone-ish feel is for you.

If you love taking pictures outdoor, this is a suitable choice. Viewing the screen under direct sunlight is good. Sometimes when we view our screen while walking in the sun, we can’t really see what’s on. But I have no problem texting or viewing Facebook while walking under the blazing bright sun with RedMi Note.

I can accept all the flaws of the RedMi Note because it is just minor items here and there. I just hope they will roll-out the KitKat version of MIUI which is probably going to be known as MIUI v6. I have been following the MIUI development and the MIUI v6 is currently on testing and is still unstable. So when they managed to roll-out the full release version, I’m sure there will be an OTA update for the RedMi Note.

In my closing words, I feel that the Xiaomi RedMi Note is a good buy. If you’re thinking of getting a low priced performance Android smartphone, I will recommend this one. If you have some extra cash in hand, then the Xiaomi Mi3 is another good one to get. I will review the Mi3 if and when I get to try a review set. So…anyone from Xiaomi Malaysia kind enough to borrow me your review sets? Thank you in advance. 🙂

  1. Hi Azwan, this is Kate Zhao from Xiaomi (MIUI) forum. I find your article very interesting. Can you contact me via my email. Thank you and look forward to hearing from you.

    • i bought it from directd last week…..not rooted with MIVI 5 …facebook crashed ….took it back but either i talk to the wrong person (a young punkster) or they clean their hands of this matter…..make me so piss off

      • If you want to use the rooted version, you have to download and install the beta version of the MIUI. Facebook crashed on my end too simply because this OS is China version. Remember, China doesn’t allow any access to Facebook. What you can do is install the international version of MIUI in order to use Facebook. I will try and find a guide for you to do that and post the link here. Stay tuned.

        • Hi azwan, can explain more details or perhaps provide a guide how to install international version of miui? Tq

  2. hi Azwan ,
can u share the 3G connectivity of this redmi note, how its d/l speed does it shows H+ ,u can add in more ur finding on the network

    • Hello.

The 3G network here in Malaysia is good. The phone has a good receiver and it shows H+ most of the time when I was in the office in KL and also at home in Sunway. The signal is still strong when I’m in a building. Very seldom I see it goes to EDGE.

      Hope this helps.

  3. Greetings Azwan,

I really want this phone so badly and I want to use it for reading lecture notes and e-books as I’m a student. So, would you mind to do a review by opening a big pdf files, maybe around 400-500 pages and see the response time for the pdf file completely open and ready for reading? Then try to skip to the next few pages and see if the phone can open the pages smoothly. Sorry for so much things. Really glad if you could do that.

    Cheers

    • There are a lot of forums out there giving you a tutorial or step-by-step approach on how to root the phone. Just Google about it. Best is to join the MIUI/Xiaomi forum for that.

  4. Thank you for your review. I finally got one of those RedMI Note after buying the MI3. Both of them are quite impressive for that price ! I have installed quite a lot of applications, and 8 GB does not seem to be much of a problem with the Note.

But I have a problem with a French simcard that is recognized by the MI3 bot not by the RedMI Note. Any idea how to solve it, anyone ? Thank you.

  5. Bro, like you said, MIUI simply just not an interface but an OS that had been modified. So, just want to know wether all the official xiaomi(MALAYSIA) phone that sell by them in our market had been rooted or non rooted phone. Mohon pencerahan. Tq.

    • That is the usual question that people ask. But those who bought the phone from the official website will get the phone unrooted. It is safer for them to sell the phone when it is locked rather than selling it away as a rooted phone.

  6. salam bro, i wanna asking, is this hp works well with pdf and office stuffs, i am a student and it is exciting to have a hp with very affordable price .. answer me 🙂

    • Salam. Fon ni mmg sesuai kalau nak guna untuk office stuffs sebab screen dia besar. Install je app Adobe Reader untuk PDF dan Kingsoft Office untuk Words dan sebagainya.

  7. Been using it for a few days. For a mid-range phone, the Redmi Note has solid build. The MIUI interface is a beauty. For the first time ever, I am not tempted to install any other launcher. The 13MP back camera is a killer. I took some pictures using the auto settings and I am amazed at the picture quality.

The only downside is that it only comes with a white back cover. More colour choices would have been better.

Bought it for RM699.00 at Prangin Mall, Penang.

My rating: 4 out of 5

  8. Bought this phone for relatives in Cambodia. I actually bought the Octa Core version and then the LTE version. They are happy with both of the phone so thank you Xiaomi for making a good quality phone with great specs at good price. I myself in Canada am using the Nexus 5 and OnePlus 1 🙂

  9. Salam bro..sy pkai fon ni jugak..tp ad msalah sikit..knapa bila play lagu dekat music sound bunyi okey jer..tapi bila mmbe send lagu kat whatsaap sy play kat whatsaap sound dia bunyi macam speaker pecah..knpa yea?

    • W’salam. Bukan sebab fon tu. Yg tu sebab whatsapp. Dah cuba main file tu kat fon lain? Mcm mana bunyi dia?

      • Kalau hantar melalui bluetoot oke je xde masalah pon…bila send kat fon lain pon xde masalah..bunyi oke..cuma bunyi lagu kat whatsaap sy je yg xoke..so..whatsaap la yg masalah kan..bukan speaker fon sya?

  10. Assalamualaikum bro Azwan,

3: Macam mana nak tahu original dgn clone since phone ni kan dari China?

Harap Bro Azwan boleh reply ASAP la yer. Thanks 🙂

    • W’salam

Sori lambat reply sebab dok busy 2 minggu ni dan takde kemudahan internet.

Sekali lagi, sori lambat reply. Salam.
