Exploring Malaysia’s First Palm-Based Payment Innovation
OpenSys Technologies Sdn Bhd (“OpenSys Technologies”), a subsidiary of OpenSys (M) Bhd, today introduced PalmWav™, an innovation prototype exploring the use of palm-recognition technology for seamless, device-free payments in Malaysia. The system demonstrates interoperability with Malaysia’s existing payment infrastructure, including PayNet’s MyDebit network.
The introduction marks another step in OpenSys Technologies’ innovation journey, highlighting its efforts to explore next-generation technologies in the digital payments space. Users can experience seamless transactions with a simple wave of the hand, complementing existing payment methods such as smartphones, physical cards, and wallets.
This internal showcase offered OpenSys employees and key partners an early look at the PalmWav™ experience ahead of its public debut. Kom.Fi Café in Kuala Lumpur and Bread Maison in Petaling Jaya served as the initial pilot locations for live demonstrations, illustrating the system’s potential convenience and reliability in real-world scenarios.
Powered by Tencent Cloud’s AI innovation, PalmWav™ uses palm recognition to create a unique, encrypted “palm signature.” The system authenticates users within seconds, in line with the highest standards of privacy and security practices.
Enrolment is straightforward. Users can sign up via the PalmWav™ mobile app and perform a one-time registration at participating merchant outlets. Once enrolled, payments can be made by scanning the user’s palm above the PalmWav™ reader.
PalmWav™ currently operates in a controlled production environment that demonstrates interoperability with Malaysia’s payment ecosystem, including PayNet’s MyDebit. Through this pilot, OpenSys Technologies aims to explore how biometric technology can contribute to a simpler, faster, and more intuitive payment experience.
