B2B paid search converts at just 1.5%; cold email replies have fallen to 3.43%. LinkedIn research finds in-person events remain marketers’ most effective channel. As 4Networking marks 20 years and 68,000 meetings, see how businesses are weighing networking alongside digital marketing.
— B2B marketers are navigating a shifting mix of channels for lead generation. Paid search converts at an average of 1.5% for B2B campaigns, falling to around 1.1% in competitive sectors such as B2B SaaS and technology, according to 2026 benchmark data from Ruler Analytics and FirstPageSage. Cold email reply rates have also declined, averaging 3.43% in 2026 compared with roughly 5% the previous year, according to Instantly’s 2026 cold email benchmark report.
These figures don’t mean digital channels don’t work – many businesses use them successfully as part of a wider marketing mix. But they do help explain why in-person channels continue to feature strongly in marketing plans. LinkedIn’s B2B Marketing Benchmark Report, which surveyed 1,577 B2B marketing leaders, found that in-person events were rated their most effective marketing channel, with 60% planning to continue prioritising it.

Referrals are also widely cited within the marketing industry as a valuable source of new business for SMEs, with some industry research putting the figure as high as 65%. Even so, many SME owners report having no consistent, structured approach to generating them.
4Networking (4N), founded in 2006, is marking its 20th anniversary in 2026. 4N reports that it has hosted over 68,000 meetings and facilitated more than 250,000 one-to-one business conversations across the United Kingdom. Today, more than 70 meetings take place every month, both online and in person. Members credit the organisation’s one-to-one meeting format with helping generate introductions and referrals.
The Department for Business and Trade’s Longitudinal Small Business Survey 2024 found that, among businesses with no employees, 23% cited business networks and trade associations as a source of external advice – behind accountants (34%) and consultants or general business advisers (24%), and ahead of internet search (17%). This suggests networking is one option among several that small business owners already turn to, rather than a dominant channel.
Brad Burton, founder of 4Networking, reflecting on the milestone, said: “I started 4N because I was skint and networking was the only marketing I could afford that actually worked. Twenty years later, it’s still one of the most overlooked channels available to businesses.”
Caroline Andrew, Managing Director of 4Networking, said: “Twenty years ago, 4N was founded on a simple belief: that business is built on relationships, and relationships are built in rooms. Across 68,000 meetings, we’ve seen that when business owners show up consistently, listen genuinely, and give before they expect to receive, good things tend to follow. We are not a business card exchange.”
The UK’s 5.7 million private sector small and medium-sized businesses account for around 60% of private sector employment and 51% of turnover, according to the Department for Business and Trade’s Business Population Estimates 2025.
