— Upon the release of information that the Florida Building Code will be updated in 2027, Tampa Bay’s JMI Windows & Doors is offering guidance to Tampa Bay homeowners, builders and contractors on the building code changes, which are set to take effect on January 1, 2027. The changes are expected to include revisions to Florida’s impact-area requirements in parts of the state, making early product selection and permitting important for homeowners planning any window or door projects.
JMI Windows & Doors encourages property owners to review their project timing, local requirements and product approvals ahead of the transition date. Under the anticipated effective date of January 1st, permits not secured before the current code cycle ends may need to comply with the updated requirements.
“We want to help homeowners understand that window and door replacement involves much more than taking out an old unit and putting in a new one,” said Leo Alabovitz, owner of JMI Windows & Doors. “The product has to be appropriate for the home’s location, meet applicable code requirements and be installed correctly. Homeowners and contractors who begin those conversations early have more time to make informed decisions before the new code takes effect.”
Florida’s building requirements vary by location and exposure, especially in areas vulnerable to wind, hurricane damage and flooding, which may have impact-resistance standards that differ from more inland areas. The forthcoming code changes may affect which products will be permitted in certain areas.
