Strengthening initiatives based on water-related risk assessments at the river basin level
— FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation announced revised targets for water resource conservation across the Fujifilm Group. The revised targets strengthen the Group’s approach to water stewardship by promoting actions based on water-related risk assessments conducted at the river basin and site levels, in addition to ongoing initiatives for efficient water use and water quality conservation.
The Group is advancing initiatives in four priority environmental areas: addressing climate change, conserving biodiversity, promoting resource circulation, and ensuring product and chemical safety.*1 As a core element of its biodiversity conservation initiatives, the Group has positioned water resource conservation, which is closely linked to the maintenance of ecosystems, as a key priority.
Water is an essential resource that supports business activities, while also being a shared resource that sustains local communities and natural ecosystems. Amid growing global concerns about water scarcity and deteriorating water quality due to factors including climate change and population growth, the conservation and sustainable use of water resources have become important issues for both business resilience and the sustainability of society.
Water availability is geographically uneven, and water-use conditions and associated risks vary by region. As a result, the concept of assessing and managing water-related risks at the river basin level is gaining international recognition. In addition to its ongoing initiatives to reduce water withdrawal, use water efficiently, and conserve water quality, the Fujifilm Group will identify and address water-related risks at the river basin level, recognizing that such risks differ from region to region. By deepening its understanding of local water-related issues and promoting initiatives that take the needs of local communities and natural ecosystems into consideration, the Group will work to support the sustainable use of water resources and reduce water-related risks.
Water-related priority areas and targets for biodiversity conservation
1. Water Risk Management
The Fujifilm Group will annually assess water-related risks at its production sites, including water stress, water pollution, and sanitation conditions, at the river basin level. The Group will ensure that necessary measures remain in place at all sites assessed as having high water-related risks, including potential risks.
Target: Maintain a state in which necessary measures are implemented at all sites assessed as having high water-related risks.*2
2. Efficient Use of Water Resources
To limit increases in water withdrawal associated with the expansion of business activities, the Fujifilm Group will continue to promote the efficient use of water resources.
Target: Maintain water resource efficiency, calculated as water withdrawal per unit of revenue, at or below the fiscal 2025 level.*3
3. Water Quality Conservation
The Fujifilm Group will work to prevent wastewater-related incidents in order to reduce the impact of wastewater discharged from its business sites on natural ecosystems.
Target: Continue efforts to prevent wastewater discharge incidents outside business sites.*4
The Fujifilm Group’s original businesses, including the manufacture of motion picture film and photographic film, required clean water. This background has fostered a strong awareness of the importance of water resources throughout the Group’s business activities. The Group began working at an early stage to reduce water withdrawal and promote water recycling, and has positioned nature-positive*5 approaches to water-related initiatives as an important concept. The Group has also promoted the conservation of forests, springs, and rivers in cooperation with local stakeholders. These efforts include the Fujifilm Yusui-no-mori (Spring Water Forest) in Minamiashigara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, the company’s founding location, and Fujifilm Iyashi-no-Komichi (Healing Path) within the Fujinomiya site in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Both areas have been certified as Nature Symbiotic Sites.*6
Through the efficient use of water resources, appropriate responses to water-related risks, and the conservation of water quality, the Fujifilm Group will seek to enhance the resilience of its business activities while conserving natural ecosystems. The Group will also deepen its understanding of local water-related issues and continue initiatives that support the sustainable use of water resources, thereby contributing to a sustainable society while taking biodiversity conservation into consideration.

*2 Water-related risks are assessed using Aqueduct, a water-risk mapping tool provided by the World Resources Institute (WRI), an international environmental think tank, in combination with interviews conducted with individual production sites.
*3 Water resource efficiency is calculated by dividing the total volume of water withdrawn by all consolidated subsidiaries of FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation by revenue. Water resource efficiency in fiscal 2025 was 1.23 thousand cubic meters per JPY 100 million in revenue.
*4 In addition to managing wastewater quality within its business sites, the Fujifilm Group implements thorough measures to prevent leakage. A wastewater discharge incident outside a business site refers to an incident at a production site of a consolidated subsidiary of FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation in which wastewater containing regulated substances is discharged at concentrations exceeding limits stipulated by environmental laws and regulations.
*5 An approach that seeks to halt and reverse the loss of natural ecosystems.
*6 The Japanese government launched a program in 2023 to achieve the 30by30 target, aiming at protecting or conserving at least 30% of land and sea areas by 2030.
