VectorTraders Examines Expanding Perpetual Contract Markets as Crypto and Traditional Assets Gain New Listings

Crypto.com introduces US perpetual contracts, while Binance adds perpetual contracts linked to equities and exchange-traded funds

— DENVER, Colo. — October 29, 2026 — Developments in the perpetual derivatives market this week have expanded access to contracts linked to cryptocurrencies and traditional financial assets, creating additional markets in which funding rates and price differences between spot and futures contracts can influence trading strategies.

VectorTraders Examines Expanding Perpetual Contract Markets as Crypto and Traditional Assets Gain New Listings

On October 27, Crypto.com and OG.com announced the launch of crypto perpetual contracts for eligible US traders, offering up to 5x leverage and trading around the clock. Retail customers can access the contracts through the Crypto.com App, while institutional and advanced traders use the Crypto.com Exchange. OG.com provides the derivatives infrastructure, with OG.com Markets operating as a designated contract market and derivatives clearing organization under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

On October 29, Binance Futures announced six USDⓈ-margined perpetual contracts linked to traditional financial assets, including Occidental Petroleum, Amgen, Pfizer and MercadoLibre. The contracts offer maximum leverage of 20x, trade 24 hours a day, and use funding intervals of eight hours, with rates capped at plus or minus 2.00% per interval.

These developments expand the range of assets available through perpetual derivatives. They also illustrate the role of funding payments, which can influence the costs and potential returns associated with holding positions in these markets.

How perpetual contracts generate returns

Perpetual contracts are derivatives without a fixed expiry date. Exchanges use funding payments between long and short position holders to help keep contract prices aligned with the underlying asset’s spot price. On Binance’s newly listed contracts, these payments occur every eight hours.

When a perpetual contract trades at a premium to its underlying asset, funding may require long position holders to pay short position holders. When the contract trades at a discount, the payment direction may reverse. The applicable rate depends on market conditions and the exchange’s funding mechanism.

For directional traders using leverage, funding payments can add to the cost of maintaining a position or offset some of its costs. For strategies designed to receive funding, these payments may represent a source of income, although their direction and magnitude can change.

Funding-rate arbitrage typically involves holding an asset in the spot market while taking an offsetting short position in the corresponding perpetual contract. When the positions are appropriately sized, gains and losses associated with changes in the underlying asset’s price may substantially offset one another. The strategy’s results then depend in part on funding payments, trading fees, execution costs, and the effectiveness of maintaining the hedge.

Basis arbitrage seeks to capture differences between spot prices and futures prices. These spreads can change as market conditions, demand, and the time remaining until a futures contract expires affect pricing. Strategies involving quantitative contract trading may use additional models and trading signals, introducing risks that differ from those of a straightforward hedged funding-rate strategy.

“Every new perpetual market that opens is another funding stream,” said Michael Bennett of VectorTraders. “Running these strategies properly means holding two legs across venues, rebalancing as funding shifts, and watching settlement cycles around the clock.”

Market access and investment considerations

Managed trading arrangements allow investors to gain exposure to trading strategies without executing and maintaining the underlying positions themselves. Such arrangements vary in structure, fees, investment terms, and withdrawal conditions.

Returns from funding-rate and basis arbitrage depend on several factors, including prevailing funding rates, the size of the basis, trading costs, liquidity, and the ability to maintain positions across exchanges. Historical performance and projected annualized returns do not establish what an investor will earn in the future.

Funding rates can fluctuate significantly and remain negative for extended periods, reversing the payment direction on which some strategies rely. Price differences between markets may also widen unexpectedly, while execution delays, insufficient liquidity, exchange outages, and counterparty failures can affect results.

Trading on third-party exchanges introduces additional operational and counterparty risks. Leverage can magnify losses, and hedging does not eliminate all market or execution risk. Investors may lose some or all of their capital, and returns are not guaranteed.
