9-Year-Old Entrepreneur Launches His Brand, King’s Chocolate Company During NYFW

Nine-year-old Cru King is launching King’s Chocolate Company during New York Fashion Week. Raised backstage by The Bureau Fashion Week founders Krissy and Brady King, he is turning childhood exposure to entrepreneurship into his own venture, supported by his parents’ experience and industry connections.

— At 18 months old, Cru King was already walking a fashion runway. The eldest son of The Bureau Fashion Week founders Krissy and Brady King modeled for designer Pia Bolte as a toddler, beginning an unusual childhood spent around designers, models, photographers and the machinery behind major fashion productions.

Now nine, Cru is moving from participating in his parents’ events to starting something of his own. He is launching King’s Chocolate Company during New York Fashion Week, introducing a business bearing the family name in the same environment where he has spent much of his childhood.

The launch is notable partly because of Cru’s age, but his upbringing provides important context. He and his two younger siblings, ages six and five, regularly travel with their parents to Fashion Week productions and are homeschooled. Rehearsals, castings, business conversations and backstage operations have consequently become familiar parts of their lives.

“Our children have collected more backstage passes than amusement park tickets,” Krissy King said.

Growing Up Inside a Family Business

The Kings built The Bureau Fashion Week while raising their children, creating an overlap between family life and entrepreneurship that was often far less glamorous than the runway itself. During the company’s early years, Krissy answered emails during nap times, planned productions after bedtime and traveled with diaper bags, laptops and garment racks. She has also recalled nursing babies backstage while lining up models for shows.

Cru therefore grew up seeing both sides of entrepreneurship. There were finished productions and crowded venues, but there were also deadlines, financial pressures, travel and long hours of work before anyone reached the runway.

“If it were easy, everyone would do it,” Brady has said of the experience of building The Bureau.

King’s Chocolate Company marks a change in that family story. Rather than simply accompanying his parents or participating in their productions, Cru now has a project attached to his own name.

Why Starting at Nine Is Different

Children starting businesses is not a new phenomenon, particularly as social media and e-commerce have made it easier for young creators to introduce products to audiences. What makes Cru’s circumstances unusual is the environment surrounding the launch.

New York Fashion Week gives King’s Chocolate Company an audience and setting that most first-time entrepreneurs do not have. Cru also has parents with years of experience in marketing, event production and business development. Those advantages are important context rather than details to overlook.

At the same time, access does not eliminate the lessons involved in building something. Even a small venture introduces basic questions that every founder eventually confronts: What is the product? Who is it for? How should it be presented? What makes someone willing to buy it?

For a nine-year-old, those questions may be more valuable than immediate commercial success.

From the Family Business to His Own Brand

The launch also illustrates how deeply The Bureau Fashion Week has become intertwined with the King family itself. Cru and his siblings have grown up backstage rather than encountering their parents’ work only from a distance.

Krissy has described leadership as something she wants her children to understand through experience rather than titles. “As a wife, mother, and business owner, I hope our children see that leadership isn’t about titles. It’s about serving people well,” she said.

King’s Chocolate Company now gives Cru an early opportunity to find out what having his own venture requires.

There are still important details about the business that have yet to emerge publicly, including the full product lineup and its plans beyond its Fashion Week introduction. That makes it premature to measure the company by conventional business benchmarks.

For now, the more significant development is simpler. A child who first appeared on a runway before he was old enough to remember it is returning to New York Fashion Week at nine with something carrying his own name.

Cru King has spent much of his childhood watching his parents build.

With King’s Chocolate Company, he is beginning to learn what it means to build something himself.
